Howitt House to be completed 2006
Green strategies:
-Passive solar orientation (southwest) with long axis parallel
to the grade contours. Primary spaces have large windows facing view & sunlight.
Secondary rooms are located on the north side, with fewer & smaller windows
-Rastra block foundation & lower walls (R25) serve as thermal
mass, retaining walls, and greenhouse base walls
-Panelized (factory built) floor & upper wall framing, I-joist
floors, raised-heel roof trusses for reduced heat loss
-Bio-base spray foam insulation fills wall cavity & prevents
convection air movement
-Energy star home, with high efficiency boiler & hot water
heating
-Lower level radiant-heated concrete slab for thermal mass
-Open stairway allows heating/cooling effect of earth to
rise into upper level, brings daylight in from above
-Plumbing is grouped for short runs, bathrooms are back-to-back
and stacked
-Greenhouse is located for maximum southern exposure & extends
the sheltered courtyard
-Efficient wood-burning stove provides supplemental heat:
The foyer provides an air-lock for winter
-Pre-finihsed clear sealer for wood siding requires less
maintanance than paint
-Area: 2600sf gross for 3-4 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, including
studio & utilty spaces
